The last 15 years have seen an unparalleled upsurge in popular political protest - from demonstrations against live animal exports to demands for the banning of the Satanic Verses to riots against the poll tax. The energy for such movements has had little to do with the official politics of Westminster, yet many seem to have won the day.

This fast-paced and mischievous film tells the stories of some of the people caught up in these movements. Some are well-known, others just grassroots activists who found themselves at the centre of events. Among those featured are:

  • JEAN GOSLING, the Wanstead lollipop lady whose protests against the M11 led her to become a leading figure in a series of anti-road campaigns.

  • DAVID BADDIEL, who witnessed police tactics at first hand when he was arrested for obstruction during a 'Stop The City!' demonstration in the mid 1980's.

  • Charity worker NASIS NAZIR, one of the many Muslims so outraged by the publication of Salman Rushdie's The Satanic Verses that he took to the streets of Bradford to complain.

  • BETTY COOK, a miner's wife from Barnsley whose experience during the miners' strike changed her life completely.

  • LYNTON KWESI JOHNSON, who reads his rap poem License Fa Kill, about deaths in police custody and police brutality against black people.

  • Anti-hunt protestor JOHN CURTIN, who tried to dig up the recently buried body of the Duke of Beaufort because of the Duke's reputation as the founder of modern hunting.
