BODYSHOCK  MEGATUMOUR

In the Romanian province of Transylvania, Lucica Bunghez is being eaten alive, consumed by an 11-stone tumour growing out of her back. It's benign, but keeps growing, wrapping round her back and sucking the life out of her day by day. Ultimately it will kill her. Lucica suffers from Neurofibromatosis (or Nf), a genetic disorder that makes the body spontaneously produce benign tumours. Doctors don't dare operate on a tumour this size, meshed as it is with vital arteries and nerves. Only one man can help her. Dr McKay McKinnon, at the University of Chicago Hospital, is a world-expert at removing large tumours, and Lucica has sent a desperate plea for him to see if he can save her. Although Dr McKinnon has only ever done one operation of this magnitude and knows there is a huge risk that it will kill her, he agrees to travel to Romania to operate on her. BodyShock: Megatumour follows Lucica's story with exclusive access to Lucica, other Nf patients, the surgeons and the families as they face the agonising decisions and operations to tackle one of the most mysterious medical conditions today.
