THE GATHERING OF THE TRIBES

Documentary about the anarchic poetry recital fronted by beat poet Allen Ginsberg at the Royal Albert Hall in June 1965. Optimistically called `The Cosmic Poetry Visitation', the event attracted 12,000 people, many fuelled with LSD. The show was introduced by anarchist and heroin addict Alex Trocchi, and allowed the audience to play a role as important as the speakers. The poetry was a mixture of brilliance and self-indulgent ranting - but it was the moment when the London underground scene truly found itself.
