How protective do we need to be of our children and how dependant are they on
us? What would happen if children lived alone together? Ten boys from Bushey in
Hertfordshire were chosen to live together by themselves in a house for five
days. Aged 11 and 12, none of them knew each other beforehand.
The house and garden were stocked with toys, games, painting and drawing
materials. The kitchen was stocked with food.
Cameras were placed in the bedrooms to monitor the children at night, though
during the day a camera crew filmed in the house. The children didn't speak to
the crew, and the crew only intervened if the children were in danger.
There was a doorbell the children could ring at any time if they needed help.
They could talk to an adult, to their parents, or to a child psychiatrist
attached to the production who had met them all individually beforehand. They
were also free to leave the house if they wanted to.
